How the check digit works

The last digit of every GTIN is calculated from the others. Starting from the right, the digits are multiplied by 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on. The check digit is what you add to that sum to reach the next multiple of ten. A scanner repeats the calculation, so a single wrong digit is caught at the till.

Which GTIN do I have?

13 digits: EAN-13. The usual barcode on consumer products outside North America.

12 digits: UPC-A. The usual barcode in the United States and Canada.

8 digits: EAN-8. For small packs with little room for a barcode.

14 digits: GTIN-14. For cartons and cases. In a QR code every GTIN is written as 14 digits.
